Research Scientist
Combustion
Chemical and Environmental Engineering

Charles has been a research scientist at Yale since the 1990s. His research interest is using sustainable fuels to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants, especially soot particles. Recent topics include determining the dependence of sooting tendency on fuel structure, using this knowledge to design low-soot sustainable fuels, understanding the impact of ammonia on particulate emissions, improving the stability of ammonia flames, and increasing the visibility of hydrogen flames.
